What You Must Do

Rest from your labors and pay thy devotions unto the Most High. Offer our religious offerings and sacraments with thanksgiving, and confess our sins unto thy brethren and before the Lord. Let thy food be prepared with singleness of heart. Confess His hand in all things and obey his commandments.

Ezra Taft Benson, May 1971 Ensign -“Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy”

What You Must Do

Set this holy day apart from activities of the world and consecrate themselves by entering into a spirit of worship, thanksgiving, service, and family centered activities appropriate to the Sabbath. Make your Sabbath activities compatible with the intent and Spirit of the Lord.

Doctrine & Covenants

The Lord's Promises to You

Always have His Spirit to be with us.

D&C 20:77, 79

That thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world.

D&C 59:9

James E. Faust

The Lord's Promises to You

I would counsel all students, if they can, to arrange their schedules so that they do not study on the Sabbath. If students and other seekers after truth will do this, their minds will be quickened and the Infinite Spirit will lead them to the verities they wish to learn.

Sure protection for ourselves and our children against the plagues of our day.

James E. Faust. November 1991 Conference Ensign, p. 34, “The Lord's Day”.

Ezra Taft Benson

The Lord's Promises to You

Our joy will be full.

The fullness of the earth is yours (the animals, good things of the earth, whether for food or for raiment or for houses, or for barns, or for orchards, or for gardens, or for vineyards; ...both to please the eye and to gladden the heart;...to strengthen the body and to enliven the soul.)

D&C 59:9-13, 16-21
Ezra Taft Benson, May 1971 Ensign -“Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy”

First Presidency

Leviticus

The Lord's Promises to You

“Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.

“And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.

“And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. …

“For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you”.

Lev. 26:2-6, 9 / “Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy” - by Elder Earl C. Tingey, Ensign, Feb. 2000, p. 48-55

President George Albert Smith

The Lord's Promises to You

Escape sorrow and distress. (“Much of the sorrow and distress that is afflicting...mankind is traceable to the fact that they have ignored his {God's} admonition to keep the Sabbath day holy.”)

President George Albert Smith, Oct. 1935 Conference

John H. Groberg

The Lord's Promises to You

“There is power in keeping the Sabbath day holy. ...he gives us commandments so he can bless us as we keep them and thereby have joy. As we keep the Sabbath day holy he will bless us, and we will achieve a quiet power for good as individuals, as families, and as nations, that we cannot obtain in any other way.”

“..there is power in keeping the Sabbath day holy—power to help others as well as ourselves. If we would have God’s blessings and protection as individuals, as families, as communities, and as nations, we must keep His Sabbath day holy.”

“The Power of Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy” - John H. Groberg - October 1984 Gen. Conf.

Elder Melvin J. Ballard

The Lord's Promises to You

No man goes away from this Church and becomes an apostate in a week or in a month. It is a slow process. The one thing that would make for the safety of every man and woman would be to appear at the sacrament table every Sabbath day.

We would not get very far away in one week—not so far away that, by the process of self-investigation, we could not rectify the wrongs we may have done.

If we should refrain from partaking of the sacrament, condemned by ourselves as unworthy to receive these emblems, we could not endure that long, and we would soon, I am sure, have the spirit of repentance. The road to the sacrament table is the path of safety for Latter-day Saints.
